How Social Media is Affecting You This Holiday Season

When you open Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc) what do you see? Presents, family, cars, promotions, and work anniversaries. As humans we naturally compare our life circumstances to those messages we receive from social media. We often wish for our lives to be as picturesque as the lives of others that we see.

With those comparisons we make judgements about ourselves, we determine whether we are “good enough” or if we have “tried hard enough”. Those judgements result in a self conviction of competence, ability, and value. When we compare ourselves to the snapshot of others lives we are left wanting. Our error is in viewing the snapshot and making an assumption of the person’s life, level of success, and level of happiness. Our envy clouds the reality of life’s ebb and flow.

Someone once said “the grass may be greener on the other side, but the water bill is much more expensive. Are you willing to pay the cost for the greener lawn?”

Do you want to convict yourself when you are doing the best that you can?
